Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder of the brain in which a person has unwanted and repeated thoughts, ruminations, images, ideas, and impulses (obsessions). This generates significant anxiety and distress that the person finds intolerable. These obsessions and compulsions can seriously impact one’s life and cause further mental health instability. To reduce the anxiety the person may perform some ritual or behaviour (compulsions). Common compulsions include handwashing, cleaning, counting of things, and repeating routine activities such as sorting through objects to ensure they are in a certain order. However, compulsions are not limited to the above.
